U.S. stocks wobbled between small gains and losses, as elevated energy prices exacerbated concerns about inflation and lingering worries about China’s property sector weighed on sentiment.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost less than 0.1%. The S&P 500 ticked down 0.1% while the tech-heavy Nasdaq traded remained mostly flat.
Stock indexes have been dragged lower in choppy trading in recent weeks. Investors are contending with an energy crunch that threatens to add to inflationary pressures just as signs emerge that global economic growth is slowing. Though investors’ fears about the debt ceiling have calmed, concerns about disappointing economic data have intensified.
