A TEENAGER has been arrested by gardai probing a massive €20million online fraud scam, the Irish Sun can reveal.
The 19-year-old was lifted in Co Kildare by officers from the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau on suspicion of directing a criminal organisation.
He’s suspected by investigators under ‘Operation Skein’ of being a “herder” who has recruited over 30 money mules.
Once obtaining access to the mules’ bank accounts in Ireland, gardai believe the proceeds from invoice redirect frauds around the world were then sent to Ireland.
‘CYBER ENABLED FRAUD’
Investigators also believe the teenage suspect helped launder around €2m in accounts here through the “cyber enabled fraud”.
It’s understood mules were recruited from people living in the Athy, Newbridge and Kildare areas.
