Peters Wants Congress To Address Congestion At Ports


U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI), a member of the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, is leading a group of Senators in calling on Congressional leadership to provide at least $2.5 billion in funding to address port congestion through the Maritime Administration’s (MARAD) Port Infrastructure Development Program (PIDP) in the upcoming Build Back Better bill. This funding is critical to the success of the Great Lakes ports, which are a major economic engine in the region and provide an economic boost to communities throughout Michigan. Peters was joined by Chair of the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee Maria Cantwell (WA) to lead the call.

Michigan’s ports are an economic engine for the entire Great Lakes region and have seen an increase in volumes of cargo. The Great Lakes Seaway Partnership saw a 4.64% increase in cargo from 2020 to 2021.
