Performative politics isn’t good governance


Finally! Michigan’s summer is here with sunshine, vacations, friends, family and a spectacular variety of fruits and vegetables, grown by local farmers who make it easy to buy freshly-picked, healthy food. As you travel, you might see migrant workers in local fields. Their back-breaking labor brings food and beverages to grocery stores across America.

Unfortunately, this year Michigan farmers lost crops to frost, drought and floods, so Gov. Gretchen Whitmer requested a disaster declaration and financial assistance from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and President Joe Biden. The work of balancing the need to “promote the general Welfare” (Preamble to the U. S. Constitution) with keeping our economic engine running continues.

As more people get vaccinated, lives are saved, fewer resources are diverted to treat new COVID-19 cases, fewer work and school hours are lost, the economy improves and fewer hearts break. Safe, effective vaccines are…
