MUMBAI: A 42-year-old woman became the latest victim of online gift fraud when she lost Rs 6.25 lakh to the scamster who befriended her with a marriage proposal after impersonating himself as a Captain from the Indian Navy.
The victim, a Kandivli resident, arranged the money after mortgaging gold ornaments that belonged to her mother and sister. Charkop police probing the case said the victim’s mother and sister were unaware of the fraud till recently when they checked the ornaments on October 6.
The cyber police unit at Charkop police station has sought details from the bank to track the money trails which will help them in locating the fraudster. A case of impersonation, cheating and fraud has been registered against the fraudster.
The victim, employed as a compounder in a doctor’s clinic at Navi Mumbai, has registered on a marriage portal in March. In June, the victim received a WhatsApp message from the fraudster who identified…
