As relief and restoration efforts continue in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida, the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office and the Better Business Bureau are warning that scammers may take advantage of the situation.
“Unfortunately, natural disasters can attract opportunists and scammers hoping to prey on people who are down on their luck,” said Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry in a release. “So my office and I are working to help protect Hurricane Ida victims from contractor fraud, fake officials, and other criminal activity.”
A representative from Landry’s office said they did not have data on how many instances of fraud were reported after previous disasters. Bridget Trevino, the director of operations for the Better Business Bureau Serving Acadiana, said in an email there is evidence that these scams increase in the wake of disasters.
