With 2020 tax returns due next month, the Internal Revenue Service is sending out reminders to watch out for scams and unscrupulous tax preparers. Agency leaders say they are seeing a rise in scams due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with some scammers taking advantage of people trying to file their taxes. “I like to think of choosing a return preparer as if you’re choosing a doctor,” said David Talcott, acting special agent in charge at the IRS Criminal Investigation St. Louis field office. “Do some background checks, make sure they’re credentialed. And what I mean by as credentialed is if they’re a CPA or an enrolled agent, they have those continuing education and knowledge of the recent tax law updates.”According to the IRS, more than half of American taxpayers — around 55% — will use a professional to help file tax returns.
