More than 800 New Mexicans over the age of 60 lost a collective $7 million last year due to online frauds and scams, according to a new FBI report.

“COVID-19 restrictions forced more older people to use the internet to shop and socialize, exposing them to scammers and criminals,” FBI spokesman Frank Fisher said in a news release announcing the report by the agency’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.

Nationwide, about 28% of more than $4.1 billion lost in scams last year were reported by people over 60, the report said.

New Mexico ranked No. 31 among states when it comes to both number of older victims — 837 — and amount of losses.
