Candela makes electric speedboats that can 'fly' above the water – and soon you'll be able to try them out in New York

A Swedish company says it has made the world’s only all-electric, long-range speedboats. The carbon fiber Candela C-7 mimics airplanes to fly above the water, according to the company. The first batch arrived in New York Wednesday – and you’ll be able to test them out soon. See more stories on Insider’s business page. It uses hydrofoils, combined with computers and sensors, to lift it over the surface of the water so that it almost looks like it’s flying. The Candela C-7 electric speedboat.

This reduces water friction by 80%, and Candela says this makes it “completely silent” as it glides over the water. It’s powered by a 40Kw battery, and Candela says the cost of operating a C-7 is 95% lower than driving a conventional fossil fuel boat. The Candela C-7 electric speedboat.

Candela says the boat can travel for 50 nautical miles at its cruising speed of 22 knots, which it says is about three times longer than the best electric boats on the market. The Candela C-7 electric speedboat.
