An elderly Charlton resident was involved in an attempted scam by two men who lied about being employees of Spectrum Technical Support, charging him $300 for a service he didn’t order.
“The fake technician told the resident they needed to turn off their television so new software could be loaded into the cable control box,” Charlton police department said in a statement. The scammer added the upgrade would cost $300 and that he would connect the resident to the billing department to facilitate the charge.
Another man, claiming to be from Spectrum Billing, convinced the customer to give his credit card number to conduct the payment. He told the resident the software expansion was a one-time fee and their monthly bill will not increase, according to police.
However, family and neighbors told the resident they thought it was a scam. Authorities were contacted and the customer canceled the credit card charge before it went through.
