Penn State Student Finds Passion In Embroidery Through Small Business

When COVID-19-fueled lockdowns hit the nation, everyone was likely searching for hobbies to fill their newfound free time. Some might’ve taken up sewing, learned to unicycle, or simply cracked open a cookbook.

While many of our new hobbies didn’t last, Owen McGee’s did. Creator of Happy Valley Threads, McGee embraced his talent and passion for unique apparel items by creating a thriving embroidery business.

A senior telecommunications major at Penn State, McGee started playing around with embroidering clothing at the start of the pandemic and has since completed 300 orders to Penn Staters and other college students alike.

“I was so bored that I just started making clothing for myself,” McGee said.

His hobby took off when people began making comments about his sweatshirt in public and asking if they could buy one from him. McGee figured, ‘Why not?’ and made an Instagram page that now, two years later, boasts more…
