Belfast bins to be subject to hi-tech efficiency study

Some of Belfast’s public bins are planned to have sensors fitted in an experiment to determine how they are used across the city.

It is hoped the project will help with problems facing the local authority in terms of finding suitable locations, introducing sufficient numbers, appropriate types, how frequently they fill up, and the required frequency of emptying.

Elected representatives at Belfast Council’s People and Communities Committee this week (Tuesday, May 11th) were informed of ongoing work on the litter analytics research project supported by the council’s City Innovation Section.

The report before councillors states the bin project is part of a programme which “seeks to harness the talent of the city’s digital small and medium enterprise sector and our world-class university research to support the council, community planning partners and local communities to create more innovative solutions to complex public policy challenges.”
